While the dream to study in the USA is strong, understanding potential visa rejections is crucial. Common reasons include insufficient financial proof, lack of ties to Nigeria or inadequate academic performance and Failure to demonstrate intent to return home after completing studies. It’s imperative to be well-prepared to mitigate these risks.
It is important to carefully review the visa application requirements and prepare all necessary documents before applying. If your visa is denied, you can reapply or appeal the decision. You can find more information about the visa application process and requirements on the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Nigeria website. It is also a good idea to consult with an experienced immigration attorney or an EducationUSA Advising Center for guidance on the visa application process.

If you have an F-1, M-1, or J-1 visa, you may be eligible to work in the U.S. But you may only qualify for work on-campus or at a job related to your studies. You are granted the options of working on your university campus, a part-time job when your university is open and you are allowed to work full-time when your university is on break.
You are only permitted to work in the US for 6 months and you will need to be granted an Employment Authorisation Document (EAD) or an M1 Visa Work Permit prior to travelling to the US.
It is very difficult to change an M1 visa to an F1 visa. Federal regulations prohibit the visa being upgraded unless the student has been incorrectly classified as an M1 student.
If you have been incorrectly granted an M1 visa, then you may change the visa to an F1 visa by following the following four steps:
- Fill in Form I-20, detailing the school that you wish to attend.
- A copy of your current I-20 form.
- Your I-94 form.
- A letter from the school you’re authorised to attend explaining why you need to have your status changed.
For those that are simply wish to change their visa status will be unable to do so and will simply need to reapply for a J1 visa when their M1 visa has expired.
Embarking on the journey alone can be overwhelming. Jaleos, with its rich experience and expertise in visa processes, is committed to guiding and assisting Nigerian students every step of the way. From document verification to interview preparations, we ensure your USA study visa journey is seamless.
Renewing your visa to continue to study in the USA is straightforward. Before your visa expires, submit a renewal application with the latest documents and ensure your I-20 form remains valid. Staying updated with any changes in visa policies is completely mandatory.
Nigerian students studying in the US on an F1 or academic J1 visa can now renew their visas without an interview. The US mission in Nigeria announced the development recently. To qualify for this procedure, you must be physically in Nigeria, renewing a student visa that is still valid or has expired within the past 24 months.
For Abuja applicants, go to [www.ustraveldocs.com/ng] and follow instructions to complete your application and visit a designated DHL facility to drop off your application with the following documents: A printout of your Submission letter (printed from ustraveldocs.com/ng), A completed DS-160, An approved I-20, A receipt for your I-901 SEVIS fee, A GTBank (MRV) receipt for your visa fee.
For Lagos applicants, go to [www.ustraveldocs.com/ng] and follow the instructions to make an interview waiver appointment for a student visa. You must come in person to the U.S. Consulate on the date and time of your appointment with the following documents: A completed DS-160, An approved I-20, A receipt for your I-901 SEVIS fee, A GTBank (MRV) receipt for your visa fee, your passport containing the expired student visa (if that passport is expired, a current valid passport is also required), A passport photograph meeting these requirements.
Applicants who do not meet these criteria should visit [www.ustraveldocs.com/ng] to schedule a regular appointment. If someone in your family or group does not meet the qualifications above, they must schedule a regular appointment. Each applicant must meet the qualifications individually. For instance, the authorities cannot accept a renewal for a child because only the parent qualifies under these guidelines. In that case, the child would need to schedule an appointment and come to the Embassy or Consulate for an interview.
